With no French language skills, little to no preparation for our 24 hours in Paris, and multiple accounts from others describing how rude the French are toward tourist, we felt apprehensive about our short stay in France. But instead we were pleasantly surprised! The owner of the hole in the wall crepe shop we ate at, was pleasant and ready to please. He made the crepes right at the window so you could see the whole process and seemed more concerned about taking care of all of his customers than about getting paid.
Then after a long wet cold day of seeing Versailles,
climbing the Eiffel Tower
a Seine River boat tour,
walking to Notre Dame
and the Louvre
and logging over 25,000 steps, we caught a bus from the Louvre back to the Eiffel Tower. Our bus driver couldn’t speak much English, but motioned to all of us to come to the front of the bus when the Eiffel Tower was in view and doing its light show. We didn’t understand that the light show only happened for 6 minutes, at the beginning of every hour, from about 9-12, but our bus driver did and knew our only chance to see it might be while we were on his bus at 9pm. We thought it so kind of him to help us have that experience. We were so bedazzled by it that we wanted an up close and personal experience so we took a long bathroom break and tried to stay dry until the 10pm show started.
Our kids were more than exhausted on the metro and tram ride home
