Catacombs of Priscilla

Most of the morning was dedicated to get these kids learning the standard things they are supposed to be learning at normal school.

It’s not easy but Trudie is getting the routine down for them and we are making sure they don’t fall behind! I did a little work today to get us ready for next week when we all go back to the new normal life. Yikes!

But the afternoon was all about a field trip to the catacombs. Feeling a bit more daring in our sweet new ride we drove 8 minutes then spent 15 minutes trying to park. We found a spot that said no parking yet there were 15 billion other cars parked there. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Can you guess where this story is going? So we parked there and you are wrong! Nothing happened. We all parked there and no one got a ticket. But Trudie asked the tour guide and he admonished us to move our car or take our chances. So we rolled the dice and got lucky this time. But we realized that among the few people we spoke with today most of them were pretty negative.

I asked the dude who parked right behind us if it was legal. No he said, but the chances were very slim of a molta. (Ticket). Ok but we will probably not press our luck anymore with that.

Now back to the catacombs. There are no pictures because they weren’t allowed inside and after we were done we raced to make sure our car was still there without a ticket.

The catacombs were of the oldest in Rome. Think around 200ad and span about 8 miles in total. Our guide was great and said that he gave a private tour to good Old Joe Biden a few years ago.

What I thought was cool was learning how the early Christians didn’t use the sign of the cross but rather the anchor and the sign of the fish. The fish because in Greek the word fish, icthus, has the first letters of Jesus Christ. There were tons of baby coffins. ☹️. Life was short and women lived less than men usually because many died in childbirth.

We saw what some thought was the first painting of a Madonna and child and lots of other biblical stories. It was a good quick in and out tour.

That evening we went and did more grocery shopping and explored our neighborhood. We are on top of a hill so fun to see things. There is a pretty good view of Rome about 100 meters away. (Speak American Kowalski! 100 yards, I like to sound like I’m already a native.).

Walking to the grocery store was fun too.

So now we are settling in and I think I’m liking this idea more and more and glad we didn’t go home. I think you just have to be in the mood for Rome and it takes a few hours of seclusion to get you back and ready to take it on. 🎢
